49ers coach Kyle Shanahan isn't counting out the possibility that RB Matt Breida will be able to play against the Packers on Monday after suffering a sprained ankle last week: "I'm not ruling him out," Shanahan said. "He'll be day-to-day. Still the same case. Still keeping our fingers crossed for it.” On Monday, Shanahan said he expected Breida would be doubtful for Monday but Breida was moving around well with no limp or walking boot in the locker room on Thursday.

Rodgers may need bigger brace after setback

Packers QB Aaron Rodgers, whose top three receivers might be back together for Monday night's game against the 49ers, is hoping to avoid going back to the bulky knee brace he used earlier in the season.

Nick Wagoner ESPN Staff Writer

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said RB Matt Breida got "better news than anticipated" with regards to his ankle sprain. It was not a high ankle sprain but Breida won't practice Thursday and will "probably be doubtful" for Monday's game against the Packers.

Cardinals beat 49ers 28-18 for 1st win of season

Josh Rosen threw a 75-yard touchdown pass to fellow rookie Christian Kirk on Arizona's first play from scrimmage and the Cardinals used five takeaways to get their first win by beating the San Francisco 49ers 28-18 on Sunday.

The 49ers' loss to Kansas City will go down as their most devastating this season because it also cost them QB Jimmy Garoppolo for the rest of the season. But Sunday's 28-18 defeat at the hands of previously winless Arizona will almost certainly go down as the ugliest. Five turnovers, nine penalties, two special teams miscues and one giant coverage bust left the Niners with a loss in a game that, on paper, they seemed to control. Compounding matters: things are about to get worse before they get better as a trip to Green Bay and a home game against the unbeaten Rams await in the next two weeks.

49ers RB Breida sprains ankle in loss to Arizona

San Francisco 49ers running back Matt Breida suffered a left ankle injury in the first quarter of Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals, and a return was ruled out just after halftime.

Nick Wagoner ESPN Staff Writer

An ugly first half on both sides ended with Arizona leading 14-6. The Niners couldn't have started better but self-inflicted wounds including a coverage bust and penalties left them trailing. Injuries continue to pile up as well. Regardless, one thing is clear, whether the Niners win or lose, they're going to do it ugly.

Key 49ers who are active today after appearing on the injury report this week: CB Richard Sherman (calf), RB Matt Breida (shoulder), OT Joe Staley, C Weston Richburg, OT Mike McGlinchey (knees). Good news for the Niners.

49ers inactives: WR Dante Pettis (knee), WR Marquise Goodwin (hamstring), OT Shon Coleman, DT Jullian Taylor, CB Jimmie Ward, G Joshua Garnett, DT D.J. Jones.

Sources: Garoppolo expected back for camp

Doctors found only a torn ACL and no other damage when they operated on Jimmy Garoppolo's knee last week, and the 49ers quarterback is expected to be back in six to eight months, putting him on track to be ready for training camp, according to sources.
