Santana anchors Phillies lineup (0:57)

Scott Lauber ESPN Staff Writer

Red Sox liked Carlos Santana's combination of on-base skills, pop and leadership qualities. They just didn't value the package as much as the Phillies, who can point to Santana as a winning player in future attempts to lure veterans as part of their rebuild. Santana isn't a true middle-of-the-order thumper, but Sox hopeful his signing helps spur movement in the markets for J.D. Martinez and Eric Hosmer.

Big fan of Carlos Santana's OBP in middle of young Phillies lineup. Will aid everyone. Santana has power and moving to NL shouldn't change that, and case can be made he's a top-10 first baseman. Even the money makes sense. Good deal. It also means, presumably, Rhys Hoskins moves back to left field. Not ideal for the pitchers. Perhaps another outfield move is pending. But Hoskins at the plate is helped by Santana arrival.

Terry Francona on Carlos Santana's maturation: "He could get kind of surly at times (when he was younger) and get a little consumed with how he's doing. And about the halfway mark of the last couple years, he's (become) a better teammate, better person. He turned himself in to a very good first baseman. He's hard not to like, lovable. You see him before the games come up and kiss me on the head, get handshakes with everybody. He's a great kid."

The Phillies are working toward a deal with reliever Pat Neshek, according to a source. Neshek made the All-Star team in Philly this season before general manager Matt Klentak flipped him to Colorado at the trade deadline. The Phillies like him as a reliable, veteran stabilizing influence for their young bullpen. And he gives teams a different look than Philadelphia's righty power relievers with his unorthodox sidearm motion.

Where will Yu Darvish end up?

The big righty might have struggled in the World Series, but he's still going to get paid this offseason as one of baseball's top free-agent pitchers.

One key move for the Phillies this offseason

The Phils could wait and make a play for Bryce Harper, Manny Machado or Gerrit Cole next offseason. Or they could start by making a splash this winter and adding one of the top free agents.

NTSB: Halladay climbed sharply before dive

Roy Halladay, in the final seconds before plummeting into the Gulf of Mexico in his new sport plane two weeks ago, was climbing sharply, a federal report says, citing the plane's data.

As teams maneuver today to add players to their 40-man rosters, one name jumps out: the Phillies designated Mark Appel for assignment. The Astros famously selected Appel first overall in 2013, one spot ahead of Kris Bryant. Traded to the Phillies in the Ken Giles deal, he had a 5.60 ERA at Triple-A and spent time on the DL with a shoulder issue. His minor league track record has been abysmal and he looks like he'll be one of those great "What went wrong?" players of history. Let's hope the right organization can find a way to fix him.

Finding the best spot for Giancarlo Stanton

When the Phillies are ready to compete, they'll be willing to spend big for the players they want. But it would be a major disaster for the organization to acquire Stanton just for him to opt out after 2020.
