Piscotty traded to A's, near mom with ALS

The Oakland Athletics have acquired outfielder Stephen Piscotty from the St. Louis Cardinals for two minor leaguers, both teams announced on Thursday.

Tristan H. Cockcroft ESPN Senior Writer

I'm glad to see Stephen Piscotty land in Oakland, where he'll see much less competition for at-bats. He's a rebound candidate for 2018, with the main thing not to like that the A's love to platoon, and he does have a 53-point career wOBA split. Still, I think Piscotty could provide top-50 outfield value at maybe an OF60-65 price.

Carlos Gonzalez's value has declined after a down year in Colorado, but he's quietly attracting interest as a free agent because he's likely to sign a short-term deal to reestablish his market value. The Blue Jays, Royals, Rays, Giants and Athletics are among the teams that have CarGo on their radar. "There will be a rush once we all realize we can't get what we want," said a personnel man for one of the clubs keeping an eye on Gonzalez.

A's trade Healy to Mariners for Pagan

The Oakland Athletics have traded power-hitting Ryon Healy to the Seattle Mariners for right-handed reliever Emilio Pagan and minor league shortstop Alexander Campos. Healy made his big league debut in 2016 with the A's.

David Schoenfield ESPN Senior Writer

You won't believe this: the Mariners have made a trade. The A's sent 1B/3B/DH Ryon Healy to the Mariners for reliever Emilio Pagan and 17-year-old minor league infielder Alexander Campos. Healy is a low-OBP slugger, the kind of player readily available in today's game, but the Mariners needed a first baseman and he provides a low-cost alternative there if the Mariners don't land somebody better in free agency. Pagan had a solid rookie season with a 3.22 ERA and impressive 56-8 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 50 innings. Healy would be one of the worst everyday first basemen in the league and given Jerry DiPoto's trade history he's not even guaranteed to last the offseason on the Mariners roster.

Will A.J. Puk be baseball's next superace?

Puk has the first-round pedigree, drafted sixth overall in 2016, and in his first full season in the minors, he reached Double-A while striking out 184 in 125 innings.

Will Matt Olson deliver bigger things in 2018?

Olson is a real, legitimate prospect, and he could and should be a part of a brighter Oakland future. However, his home run rate will be hard to sustain.

Law's offseason trade overview: Ryon Healy

Healy's performance dipped to .271/.302/.451 in his first full major league season, which could limit his trade value. However, he would be a nice bench bat for a team that leans left in its lineup.

Ranking all 30 clubs by triumphs and fails: Athletics

The A's had one of the best groups of under-25 hitters in baseball, but it was an unsuspenseful slog to last place -- they didn't have a winning month until September.
