Cubs righty Yu Darvish (triceps) is getting closer to returning after another bullpen session on Friday, according to manager Joe Maddon: "Yu did really well today. We'll wait until tomorrow then plan the next step. The next step could be he goes out and pitches a minor league situation. If he comes in and feels great (Saturday), we'll let you know where the next step is going to occur."

Cubs serve notice: They're the NL team to beat

With their athleticism and daring on the bases and in the field, the Cubs have a leg up on other contenders in the NL -- as the Dodgers found out.

Bradford Doolittle ESPN Staff Writer

Cubs starter Yu Darvish moved closer to a return from tendinitis in his right triceps after throwing a simulated game at Wrigley Field before Wednesday's game against the Dodgers. Both Maddon and Darvish said the outing went as well as could have been expected and he was able to work on all of his pitches. He will be re-evaluated on Thursday before a next step is established but it could be a rehab start, of which Darvish said he likely would only need one before he returns to the Chicago rotation.

The Cubs have placed closer Brandon Morrow on the disabled list because of back tightness. Morrow hurt himself while taking off his pants which, on the surface, sounds kind of amusing but is the kind of frustrating back-related tweak that many of us can identify with. The move is retroactive to Sunday. Reliever Justin Hancock, added as the 26th man for Tuesday's doubleheader, will remain on the big league roster.
