Red Sox just 7th in live ball era to begin 15-2

After belting six homers on Tuesday, the Red Sox added another three Wednesday, including a grand slam by Rafael Devers, to rout the Angels 9-0 and improve their record to 15-2.

The Angels entered this series with seven consecutive wins, then the Red Sox came into their place and outscored them 19-1 in the first two games. Boston is now the first team since the 2003 Giants to start a season 15-2. They lead the Majors in runs per game, starting pitcher ERA, winning percentage and run differential. Probably a lot of other stuff, too.

Ohtani set to make next start despite blister

Shohei Ohtani is expected to make his next start for the Angels after the Japanese two-way sensation was limited to two innings in his third career start Tuesday because of a blister on his pitching hand.

As of today, Hanley Ramirez has earned first base eligibility in ESPN leagues, immediately placing him atop the position on our Player Rater. From a going-forward-rankings perspective, I've now got him 22nd at the position, between Jose Martinez and Trey Mancini.

Mookie Betts scorches an eighth-inning Cam Bedrosian fastball for his third home run of the night, giving him three three-homer games in his career. His batting average is up to .389. He's also walked twice tonight.

Angels announce that Shohei Ohtani was actually removed because he developed a blister on his pitching hand in the second inning.

David Schoenfield ESPN Senior Writer

Shohei Ohtani's night did indeed end after those first two innings of shaky performance and the Red Sox then hammered an Angels reliever named Luke Bard with three home runs and five runs in the third inning. The Red Sox have been the best team in baseball and they're showing why on this night.

Alden Gonzalez ESPN Staff Writer

Shohei Ohtani's third start lasts six outs. He didn't seem to get much of a feel for his splitter and generally had a hard time throwing strikes. The eight days' rest might not have helped. 2 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO, 1 WP, 1 HR. 66 pitches, 34 strikes.

David Schoenfield ESPN Senior Writer

Shohei Ohtani isn't going to last long in his third major league start. He's all over the place with his fastball and has no feel for his secondary pitches as he's already thrown 66 pitches through two innings while trailing 3-0. This is the Ohtani who struggled with his command in spring training. If his last start was peak Ohtani, this start shows why he's still not a finished product on the mound.

Alden Gonzalez ESPN Staff Writer

Two innings in for Shohei Ohtani: 4 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks, 1 strikeout. Just three swinging strikes on 66 pitches, only 34 of which have been strikes.

With one out in the second inning and the bases loaded, the Angels have action in the bullpen. Shohei Ohtani has already topped 50 pitches and can't throw his off-speed pitches for strikes.
