The potential free-agent class has shrunk by one. The Arizona Diamondbacks have announced a three-year deal with infielder Eduardo Escobar, keeping him from the open market. Escobar enjoyed a career season in 2018, split between Arizona and Minnesota. He hit .272 with 23 homers, 48 doubles and 84 RBI.

D-backs to switch from grass to artificial surface

Arizona will install "state of the art" synthetic grass for the 2019 season. Team president Derrick Hall says the team has been looking at using an artificial surface for many years because of the challenges of maintaining grass in a desert climate.

Veteran reliever Ziegler retires after 11 seasons

Reliever Brad Ziegler, who is the Diamondbacks' all-time leader with 377 appearances, is retiring after 11 major league seasons. He also played for the A's, Red Sox and Marlins.
