Breaking down the Badgers

Jim Rutledge hosts with former Badgers and Rose Bowl Champions Derek Engler and Tarek Saleh breaking down the Badgers play against Michigan.

And that'll do it here from Ann Arbor. Michigan outgained the Badgers 444-283, held them to 11 first downs, gave its reserves a lot of fourth-quarter work and then played "Jump Around" over the PA system in the waning minutes as a final indignity. Jim Harbaugh finally gets something like a big win that should appease frustrated Michigan fans — until next week against Michigan State in East Lansing.

Down 31 points late in the fourth quarter, it was surprising to see Wisconsin QB Alex Hornibrook reenter the game. But this 8-play scoring drive gave him 75 of his 100 passing yards tonight, his first bit of sustained offensive success against Michigan.

We're almost at the end of the third quarter and Wisconsin only has nine first downs and 192 yards of offense. Michigan is living up to its billing — and numbers — as the nation's best defense. At this point, it's hard to see how the Badgers could possibly score 14 points in the remaining time.

Those two Wisconsin penalties on the opening possession of the second half — defensive holding on third down and a personal foul on the punt — were huge in giving Michigan the boost it needed to finally get into the end zone. Without them, this is still a one-score game. Now the Badgers will need to rally from two scores down with a passing offense coming off its worst first-half performance in three years.

Wisconsin's 25 yards passing was its fewest in a first half since Nov. 28, 2015 vs Minnesota (also 25), according to ESPN Stats & Info. Alex Hornibrook and the Badgers were particularly bad against the Michigan blitz, going 0-for-2 with two sacks.

Michigan stalling out on that drive and settling for another field goal is actually pretty symbolic of its offensive difficulties against Wisconsin tonight. Other than Shea Patterson's 81-yard run, the Wolverines have just 10 yards on their other 13 rushing attempts. Of course, heh, that 81-yard run still counts.

Lots of injury news here in Ann Arbor. Here's a couple of quick updates: Michigan running back Chris Evans is back in the lineup after missing the previous four games, while Wisconsin cornerback Faion Hicks is out for the rest of the game with a left leg injury.

How good is Jonathan Taylor and the vaunted Wisconsin running game? Michigan entered tonight allowing only 96.5 rushing yards per game. Three and a half minutes into the second quarter, the Badgers already have 101 rushing yards on 13 carries.

Wisconsin wasted no time with an emphatic response to Michigan's score, a 4-play, 71-yard drive capped by a 33-yard touchdown by Kendric Pryor on the jet sweep. Before that, Badgers star Jonathan Taylor peeled off three straight tackle-busting runs for a total of 38 yards. We're tied at 7-7 here in Ann Arbor, which makes sense given how evenly matched these teams are.

Michigan strikes first with 2-yard TD run (0:35)

Ok, so Shea Patterson can run-run

Wisconsin cornerback Faion Hicks is questionable to return after suffering a left leg injury early in the first quarter against Michigan, team officials said. With Hicks possibly out the rest of the game, the Badgers are now down three starters in their secondary. Safety D'Cota Dixon was ruled out in pregame warmups with a foot injury suffered last week against Nebraska and safety Scott Nelson is being forced to sit out the first half after being called for a targeting penalty against in the same game.
